COPS unity survivor weekend

WHERE does the time go? It will very shortly be our annual Survivors Weekend – a very special time of year, writes Heather Cooper, chair of the COPS’ Survivor Committee.

Members of the committee have been really busy organising and planning for the event so that it runs smoothly so that everyone is able to take away what they need from the time spent together with friends and fellow survivors.

Survivors attending the weekend – which runs from 18 – 20 July – will be staying at the Hinckley Island Hotel, Watling Street, Hinckley, Leicestershire, LE10 3JA. There will then be coach transport to the National Memorial Arboretum for the Service of Remembrance on the Sunday.

The Survivors’ Weekend this year will be a bit different for us as my husband Andy and I are part of the Police Unity Tour. There are a few other survivors doing it this year and we have been made to feel really welcome and part of the team.

Participants are cycling 170 miles over three days, starting at the National Police Memorial at The Mall in London on 18 July and travelling across six counties to the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire on 20 July.

The training has been great fun but also really tough and as the time gets closer we just want to get on with it. I have been really impressed by the commitment of the officers taking part and they have all worked tirelessly to ensure that the ride goes smoothly.

They have shown us nothing but support and encouragement and it feels really special to be a part of it. The total raised so far is pretty amazing and all the money raised goes to COPS.

Every member of the Unity Tour will be riding in memory of a police officer who has died on duty.

The riders will all wear a band on their wrist with the name of a fallen officer written on it – and the cyclist will come and meet the relevant survivor and present that band to them at the Arboretum on the Sunday.

Sadly there are a too many names of fallen officers to get through in just this ride so if you do not receive a band this year, it will happen in coming years.

I look forward to catching up with friends on the Saturday of Survivors’ Weekend.
